I applied to EACH for a Peer volunteer role as I wanted to develop my confidence skills, in particular with engaging with others and improving my communication skills to help me in returning to work.
I went through an induction and training program to help me gain the knowledge and skills to carry out the Peer volunteer role. I was still a bit nervous about “taking the plunge” and engaging with the public in public spaces.
With support from EACH staff I was involved in a number of public facing activities, helping to share health related information to a wide audience. I participated in 121 interactions with the public and spoke to them over the phone about sign posting and befriending sessions.
I helped EACH in their recruitment process by being part of interview panels, asking interview questions and making sure the service user was considered when selecting the right candidate for the job.
Whilst I was volunteering I received employment and training support from EACH’s employment specialist service. Consequently, I enrolled for an accredited training course to help me broaden my career options.
